Learning Opportunities and Upcoming Events 

 

The AHEC Scholars Program is Enrolling Health Profession Students!

This program is an opportunity for health profession students, of all disciplines, to participate in interprofessional education (IPE) healthcare activities. Please note: we are unable to accept pre-health profession students at this time. The duration of the program is 1-2 years (depending on discipline), runs concurrently with a student’s academic curriculum, and concludes when the student graduates from their respective health profession program. In addition to educational and professional enrichment, the AHEC Scholars Program offers a $500 stipend, per year, to help offset student costs. If you are interested in applying please click here. Let’s Talk Mental Health: The Community for Health Improvement Coalition, SWB AHEC, Permian Regional Medical Center will hosting the 2ndAnnual Mental Health Conference on April 26-29, 2022.  The conference will be held via zoom and will provide free CME, CEU, and CNE. Ama tu Riñon: Southwest Border AHEC will be joining Ventanilla de Salud and the National Kidney Foundation on April 21 & 22 at the “Ama tu Riñon” event. Free kidney screenings will be provided to Maverick and Val Verde County Residents. Maverick County residents SAVE THE DATE for April 21, 2022 from 9am - 2pm . Val Verde County Residents SAVE THE DATE for April 22, 2022 from 9 - 2pm.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): The course highlights the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication; systems of care; and recognition of and intervention in cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and AC.

2022 Course Dates:
April 8-9
June 3-4
August 5-6

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Recognize and perform early management of respiratory arrest
  • Demonstrate effective communication as a member of a resuscitation team
  • Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
  • Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrated external (AED) use.

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Instructor Course: On Tuesday, April 21, 2022, SCAHEC will host its Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Instructor Course. The ALSO Instructor course is an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses and other members of maternity care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes.

Strategies for Healthcare Professionals: Violence, Vulnerabilities, and Barriers: South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with Del Mar College, will host the Strategies for Healthcare Professionals: Violence, Vulnerabilities, and Barriers CE activity on June 9 & 20, 2022. This event is designed to educate healthcare professionals across disciplines on the risk factors, warning signs, and available community resources for those experiencing domestic violence.

5th Annual Hospice Symposium: South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with Del Mar College will hold the 5th Annual Hospice Symposium on June 22, 2022, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The goal of this activity is to provide both medical professionals and community members with the opportunity to learn about hospice care and the important role in plays in our health care system. The conference will feature expert presentations on a variety of topics related to including hospice and end-of-life care, palliative care, and coping/grief management strategies.

Community Health Worker Lunch and Learn: On May 3, 2022, SCAHEC will host a free live CE activity for Community Health Workers. The activity will provide an opportunity for Community Health Workers across the Coastal Bend to learn from expert speakers on relevant health topics. The activity will provide 2 DSHS-approved CE credits for CHWs. 

SEMMx: South Coastal AHEC continues to promote Salud En Mis Manos/Health in My Hands program in our community. The goal of the program is to educate Hispanic/Latina women on the importance of prevention and early detection of breast and cervical cancer as well as to offer women free or low-cost mammogram, pap smears and HPV vaccines. Our community health care workers are ready and eager to provide education to all women of South Texas.

Nueces County Mobile Clinic: Nueces County Commissioners unveil a new mobile clinic that will be used to reach the rural areas of Nueces County. South Coastal AHEC is partnering with the county in bringing health screenings and education to the community.

Community Health Fairs: South Coastal AHEC is partnering with Nueces County Commissioners to host various School Health Fairs and Immunization Drives.  We look forward to giving our students a fantastic start to a new school year.  by providing UIL Sports Physicals, Immunizations, COVID shots and testing, and several other types of mental and health resources.

2022 Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) Medical Mission: South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD), Nueces County/Commissioner (JAG) and other community organizations, is gearing up for the 2022 IRT Medical Mission. This event will take place June 21- July 7, 2022 at various sites throughout Nueces County.

Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) is a collaborative program that leverages military contributions and community resources to multiply value and cost savings for participants.

IRT Medical missions provide communities with various no-cost healthcare services including, medical, behavioral health, dental, optical, and veterinarian services. Care will be delivered by credentialed healthcare providers and no one will be turned away.

2nd Annual Virtual Dementia Symposium - April 26 & April 28, 2022: Dementia Friendly Corpus Christi initiative (DFCCI) addresses the aging population and the concurrent rise in the number of adults living with dementia. DFCCI consists of community stakeholders. These individuals aim to help different community sectors through training, outreach, and education. Our goal is to reduce stigma and isolation for those living with or caring for someone living with cognitive impairments. Speakers will include representatives from the Area Agency on Aging, Dementia Friendly Corpus Christi Initiative, community physicians, The Alzheimer's Association, Teepa Snow's PAC Team, and Caring for the Caregiver in discussing Psychology, Dementia Behaviors, Dementia Friends, and Resources.

Wellness Promotion Summit: Please consider attending the upcoming Wellness Promotion Summit on April 22 and April 23 at New Creation Christian Fellowship (8700 Fourwinds Dr. Windcrest, TX 78239). This free event will provide screenings and education on various topics from women’s health to mental health and financial services. It will also include family friendly activities such as games, moon bounces, and more.

El Bari Annual Health Fair: El Bari Community Health Center will be hosting their annual health fair Saturday, May 14th from 11:00 to 3:00 PM. The event is free and open to the community who want to come out and receive free health screenings and health education. The health fair will be a family friendly event and will include moon bounce, food and other fun activities for people of all ages. The event is located at 5281Casa Bella Rd. San Antonio, TX 78249.

South Central AHEC Public Health Camp: Public Health Camp will be held Monday, June 20 – Friday, June 24, 2022 for rising juniors and seniors for the 2022-2023 school year. Our free camp allows students to explore public health careers while learning the principles of public health. This year our camp will be held at the Neighborhood Place and students will have more of an opportunity to learn about various communities across San Antonio. Spaces are limited so we encourage everyone to apply early!

Rural Texas Symposium: Texas Texas Rural Health Association will be hosting a Rural Texas Symposium on June 8 & 9, 2022 in Lubbock, TX at the Overton Hotel. The symposium will focus on healthcare and economic development with guest speaker, Shantanu Nundy, MD, MBA, the author of Care After COVID: What the Pandemic Revealed is Broken in Healthcare and How to Reinvent It. Registration is now open and we encourage everyone to consider attending this great event.

Salud En Mis Manos (Health in My Hands) – Cancer Prevention Program Survey: The Salud en Mis Manos (SEMM) program is designed to provide Hispanic or Latina women with education on prevention and early detection of breast and cervical cancer in English and Spanish. SEMM can offer these women free or low-cost mammogram, Pap/HPV test and HPV vaccines.

Juana Escareño, CHW Instructor will deliver the SEMM cancer prevention education in April 2022. Approximately 40 Hispanic/Latina women, members of the Border Workers United, will learn how the SEMM program is able help them if eligible. This education session will be delivered in Spanish by Zoom on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, and Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
