Leaders and staff from Texas' four Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Programs gathered at the UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing for a historic statewide meeting, marking the first time all four Texas AHEC Programs had convened in person since the fall of 2017. Representatives from South Texas AHEC, Texas AHEC East, West Texas AHEC, and UTRGV AHEC came together to strengthen partnerships, share innovative practices, discuss common challenges, and explore strategic opportunities to advance healthcare workforce development across Texas. Nearly a decade after their last statewide gathering, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect and align priorities for the future. One of the most engaging sessions in the meeting featured a roundtable discussion on regional challenges, best practices, and strategic opportunities. Participants shared their greatest successes of the year, workforce recruitment and retention strategies, and barriers affecting their regions. The conversation highlighted both the diversity of Texas communities and the common mission shared by all AHEC programs. The meeting concluded with a collaborative discussion focused on future growth and innovation. Topics included preparation for the 2027 funding cycle, enhancing statewide evaluation efforts, developing coordinated recruitment campaigns, creating AI-powered educational resources for learners, strengthening rural employer partnerships, and building a statewide alumni retention network. As healthcare workforce shortages continue to affect rural and underserved communities across Texas, the gathering reaffirmed the importance of collaboration among the state's AHEC programs. Participants left with renewed energy, stronger connections, and a shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities, supporting future health professionals, and improving access to care for Texans.
