The session encouraged students to believe in their potential, overcome challenges, and stay committed to their educational goals. In alignment with TRIO's mission to support low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities in achieving college success, the presentation highlighted the wide range of opportunities in health care careers. Students were introduced to different pathways in the health professions and were reminded that perseverance, dedication, and self-confidence can open doors to a successful future. MET Youth Build Talk On June 11, 2025, Southwest Border AHEC delivered a motivational talk to MET YouthBuild students who are working toward their high school equivalency credentials. The session emphasized the importance of education as a foundation for personal growth and future opportunities, while also recognizing the students' strengths, resilience, and potential to succeed in both academic and professional pathways. For more information, contact Bonifacio Vega at (830) 758-1111 Jump Into Success Summer Camp On June 16, 2025, Southwest Border AHEC led hands-on health care activities where students attending the Jump Into Success Summer Camp hosted by Southwest Texas College learned about different jobs in the medical field and how health professionals make a difference in their communities. Along with these activities, students enjoyed team games that encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and making new friends. The camp gave everyone a chance to discover new interests and build confidence for the future. For more information, contact Bonifacio Vega (830) 758-1111 P.E.A.C.H.E.S. - Ser, Sentir y Sanar: Autocuidado desde la Inclusión  On June 18, 2025, Southwest Border AHEC hosted its monthly Promotoras En Accion - Community Health Education Series (P.E.A.C.H.E.S.) in partnership with el Consulado de Mexico Eagle Pass. This session focused on the importance of inclusion and respect for all identities within the LGBTIQ+ community. Participants explored the resources and support available locally. The goal of the session was to ensure that everyone feels seen, valued, and supported. The presentation was accompanied by a painting class, as a creative form of expression and well-being. Participants were provided education on how small habits can help increase physical, mental, and emotional health. Participants were also provided an opportunity to experience an aromatherapy session intended to help them relax and enjoy the moment. For more information contact Bonifacio Vega at (830) 758-1111 SWB AHEC - Public Health Fellowship Presentation On June 28, 2025, the Southwest Border AHEC team attended the Public Health Fellowship Conference in Laredo, Texas, where they presented their community project, From Border to Better: Managing Diabetes in Southwest Texas. This gathering brought together the five AHEC centers to showcase their successes in developing public health initiatives designed with and for the communities they serve. The Southwest Border AHEC team highlighted the important role of Community Health Workers in addressing diabetes management and promoting healthier lifestyles along the border region. The event provided a meaningful space for collaboration, learning, and celebrating community-focused efforts. This training strengthened their ability to serve as compassionate and informed advocates for the Eagle Pass community by promoting awareness, reducing stigma, and connecting individuals to appropriate resources. The session took place from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and was led by Mr. Joe Cruz from Border Federal Credit Union. Over 20 individuals attended the event, which provided practical guidance on budgeting, saving, and managing credit. The training aimed to empower participants with essential financial skills to support both personal and community well-being. For more information contact Bonifacio Vega at (830) 758-1111 Esperanza, Prevencion del Suicidio y sus Señales  On July 24, 2025, El Consulado de México in Eagle Pass hosted a Continuing Education event focused on suicide prevention and recognizing early warning signs. The session, held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, featured Dr. Pedro Vargas Ríos as the presenter and was attended by over 50 participants. Southwest Border AHEC partnered in the event and provided CE credits for community health workers. The training emphasized the importance of early intervention and equipping frontline workers with the tools to support at-risk individuals in the community. The event served over 300 students from various grade levels, providing essential school supplies to help families prepare for the upcoming academic year. The event provided school supplies to over 250 students from various grade levels, helping families prepare for the new school year. Activities included games, health education, and resource sharing to promote wellness and community connection. In this session, learned about the importance of protecting their skin from the sun and maintaining overall skin health. They learned about the risks of unprotected sun exposure, including the development of skin cancer, and were introduced to practical strategies for prevention, such as sunscreen use, protective clothing, and regular skin checks. The session also highlighted local resources and services available for early detection and screening, empowering participants to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health. As the new school semester gets underway, Southwest Border AHEC is proud to launch its Providing Enrichment Activities and Academic Knowledge to Students (P.E.A.A.K.S.) program, an initiative designed to give high school and college students the opportunity to learn directly from local health care professionals. This career exploration series allows students to engage in hands-on activities that highlight a variety of health care roles and pathways. By participating in interactive sessions, students gain practical insights into the skills, education, and experiences needed for different careers, helping them make informed decisions about their futures after high school or college. The course provides participants with comprehensive training on health promotion, disease prevention, and the essential role CHWs play in connecting individuals to health resources. The training provides students with a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in health promotion, disease prevention, and community advocacy. Participants will learn how to connect individuals to local health resources, support community wellness, and develop practical skills that prepare them for careers in health care. For more information, contact the MRGB AHEC office at (956) 712-0037 Suicide Prevention Awareness Proclamation On the morning of Friday, August 29, 2025, community leaders, health advocates, and local residents gathered inside the City Hall Chambers in Laredo, Texas, for a powerful event - the Suicide Awareness Proclamation. Hosted in collaboration with the City of Laredo, Laredo Public Health, and the Area Health Education Center (AHEC). The proclamation emphasized the importance of reducing stigma surrounding mental health, recognizing the signs of crisis, and promoting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a critical resource for those in need of immediate support. For more information, contact the MRGB AHEC office at (956) 712-0037 5k Run/Walk & Mental Health Wellness Fair On the morning of September 6, 2025, the sun rose over Laredo as families, friends, and community members gathered for a very special event - the AHEC 5K Run/Walk & Mental Health Wellness Fair. The 5K was filled with energy, determination, and hope as participants made their way along the route, each step symbolizing strength and resilience. At the finish line, the celebration continued with the Mental Health Wellness Fair, where local organizations, health providers, and community partners offered free resources, information, and support. Starting at 8:00 a.m., runners, walkers, and supporters of all ages came together with one goal: to raise awareness for mental health and to show that no one in our community is ever alone. This year, the Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC is partnering with Quickie Bakery to bring that message to life in a sweet and meaningful way. On Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, Quickie Bakery will be serving conchas not only as a treat but also as a powerful symbol of suicide prevention awareness. Throughout the week, students dove into topics like: Non-Medical Drivers of Health, Medical Anthropology, GIS & Nutrition, Lead Exposure, and so much more! The camp wasn't just about learning in the classroom, we went on exciting field trips to the San Antonio Water System Recycling Plant and Fort Sam Houston, and even welcomed Apollo, the "goodest boy" therapy animal, for some furry stress relief. πΎ Students wrapped up the week with impressive capstone presentations, showcasing their new skills and knowledge. Families connected with providers, asked questions, and received valuable guidance for their well-being. Unfortunately, Orange Grove is in a food desert. This small community has limited access to affordable food. As of 2024, the population was estimated at 1,182. South Coastal AHEC hopes to provide the community with nutritious food and helpful resources. Organizations are encouraged to attend and provide free to low-cost services to the community In August, there were 97 Households Served 212 Individuals Served 11 Volunteers Helped For more information, contact Brittany Serna at (361) 881-8133 Melissa's Last Physical Clinics Melissa Flores spent her last week with South Coastal AHEC dedicating every moment to our mission and the local community. Her last day with the South Coastal Area Health Education Center was July 31st, but she came out on August 2nd to help one last time. At the Veterans Memorial High School, she assisted with providing physicals to 154 students and 60 children at the American Bank Center for Operation Safe Return. She was truly a team player and went above and beyond. Her love for the community will bring her success as she starts her new chapter with CCMC (Bay Area) in the Labor and Delivery department. Nueces County: State of the County Each year, Nueces County holds a State of the County meeting to update citizens on local developments. In this meeting, each commissioner spoke on their precinct to highlight accomplishments made. South Coastal AHEC was recognized by all four county commissioners for its dedication to serving the community and significant contributions for a healthier Nueces County. South Coastal AHEC provided over 4,000 free sports physicals to Nueces County students. For more information, contact Brittany Serna at (361) 881-8133 Flour Bluff Health Fair Each year, South Coastal AHEC enters its' "Sports Physical season". This typically kicks off in late May and can go through early August. On August 7th, South Coastal had its last health fair for the season at Flour Bluff High School. This event helped get over 400 kids receive a free sports physical. All community members were welcome to attend and visit with the 35 local community organizations, receive an eye exam, vaccines, and resources. For more information, contact Brittany Serna at (361) 881-8133. Nueces County Operation Health & Wellness Operation Health & Wellness began in 2021 as a Military IRT (Innovative Readiness Training). However, due to budget cuts, the military has been unable to attend for the last two years. With such a high need for access to healthcare in Nueces County, Commissioner Joe A Gonzalez proposed to local organizations that we continue the mission. South Coastal AHEC's director, Belinda Flores, took charge of organizing regular meetings, bringing organizations together, filling gaps, and ensuring the success of the mission. The South Coastal AHEC office shut down its day-to-day operations and volunteered full-time at each clinic location. Dor more information, contact Belinda Flores at (361) 881-8133 Basic Life Support Certification On Friday, July 18th, the South Coastal AHEC staff took a six-hour course to become certified in Basic Life Support (BLS). They learned how to do chest compressions on adults and babies, use an AED, and open the airway. For more information, contact Brittany Serna at (361) 881-8133 In Memory of Cindy Bush It is with deep sadness that South Coastal AHEC announces we have lost an AHEC family member. Cindy Bush passed away on August 15, 2025. She worked for South Coastal AHEC as a Community Health Worker for over 8 years and was dedicated to the community. Cindy was kind, caring, and fierce. Often, she was a person people would turn to when they just needed someone to listen. Cindy loved potlucks, baking cakes for everyone's birthday, and just being around friends and family. Her presence is missed every day. We find gladness in remembering her dedication to the community, her love of Krispy Kreme, and her passion for the thrift. We love you, Cindy! | | Follow Lower Rio Grande Valley AHEC on Facebook at @lrgv.ahec Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for CHWs / Promotoras   Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) was a total success! In collaboration with the Office of Public Health of the Border, the Institute of Neurosciences of UTRGV, and LRGV AHEC, the MHFA training took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. WHY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID? MHFA teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to the signs of a mental health or substance use problem in adults. We learned how to respond with the Mental Health First Aid action plan. At the end of the training, the CHW/Promotoras(es) who met all the requirements received their certification in MHFA. This initiative brings together the South Texas Council and the Arab Community Council to share experiences and insights on dementia in their respective communities, emphasizing the importance of community-based participatory research (CBPR). As Masoud, S. (2025, August) noted, "Shared lessons learned, like the increased level of community involvement, the impact in the community, trust in building and sustain relations, and communication," are key outcomes of such collaborations. Fernandez, Manusov, and Garza. Promotoras received 1.5 non-certified continuing education hours. As per Dr. Fernandez, "the purpose of this presentation is for Promotoras (CHWs) to begin to understand resources available/unavailable, challenges to identification, definitions of mental wellness, and options for finding support." Back to School Drive in Lasara, Texas  On August 8, 2025, the small rural town of Lasara hosted a successful Back-to-School Drive. Lasara is located in Willacy County with a population of approximately 1,590. LRGV AHEC supported this initiative by providing school supplies to approximately 75 elementary students. Buckner FAYS Program Family Fun Day   LRGV AHEC participated in a Family Fun Day on August 13, 2025, at Myra Green Middle School. The event was hosted by Buckner FAYS Program Family Fund Day, in partnership with Raymondville ISD. Buckner RGV offers community services to families with children aged 6 to 17.The Family and Youth Success (FAYS) program curriculum is a comprehensive initiative designed to support the mental health and well-being of families and youth within our community. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the corner of McPherson and Del Mar fills with energy, hope, and unity as the AHEC 988 Rally brings together local agencies and community members to promote the 988 Suicide Prevention & Crisis Lifeline. Each month, it reminds the community that mental health matters and that there is a safe place to turn during moments of crisis. The presence of so many agencies working together shows the strength of Laredo's commitment: to lift up those who may be struggling, to erase the stigma around asking for help, and to spread awareness of the 988 hotline. In addition to educational and professional enrichment, the AHEC Scholars Program offers a $500 stipend, per year in the program, to help offset student costs.
