The Area Health Education Center of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area is an outreach program under the UT Health San Antonio and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to enhance the quality of life in the communities by increasing the number of well-trained health care workers; enhancing academic resources; and fostering a healthy lifestyle through community education programs. For additional information about AHEC and the menu of programs, visit https://www.facebook.com/AreaHealthEducationCenter  or www.mrgbahec.org or call (956)712-0037.

Morales, Medellin Complete Certification: The MRGB AHEC Board of Directors congratulates two of the MRGB AHEC staff members for their recent completion of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Certification in Human Resource Management.  Recently, Ms. Vicky Morales and Ms. Hazel Medellin, Academic and Continuing Education Program Coordinators, participated in an intense certification program which offered an overview and application skills of human resource management functions.  During their certification, they learned methods to better understand diverse human resource challenges, human resource laws and regulations.  Creating employee handbooks, conducting employee investigations, resolving employee conflicts, creating a positive work environment and increasing employee satisfaction are some of the skills learned that are applicable in dealing with students, employees and volunteers.  “Enhancing their skills in human resources management contributes to their professional development and supports the overall mission of the AHEC” remarked Ms. Julie Bazan, AHEC Executive Director “we value their contributions to the AHEC and the community”.

MRGB AHEC FREE Trainings Support Mental Health: Despite the COVID-19 impact on the community, the Board of Directors and Staff at the MRGB Area Health Education Center strive to help meet the needs of the community through education.  The Board understands the importance of having adequate resources to support those afflicted with mental health issues and they encourage the AHEC team to continue efforts in creating projects to serve the community.  For this reason, AHEC now offers virtual educational opportunities for everyone including those wanting to receive certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Training. The YMHFA certification empowers participants with skills to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This three-year certification gives adults who interact and work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to adolescents who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem.  Training participants receive knowledge in the areas of anxiety, depression, substance use disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), trauma, bullying, and eating disorders. Information on resources available in the community are also made available during the training in hopes to link everyone to the appropriate care needed.  Miss Karla Garza, YMHFA Certified Instructor, is please to share that a total of 65 individuals from Webb and surrounding counties have received certification.   All individuals 18 years and older are invited to take advantage of this free virtual resource.  All materials are provided with the training.   For more information on the Virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings or to host a training for your facility please contact us at kgarza@mrgbahec.org or 956-712-0037.

MRGB AHEC Student Projects Continue: The Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center ( MRGB AHEC) is proud to partner with agencies to serve the needs of the community.  Improving the lives of colonias residents along the Texas/Mexico border by increasing self-sufficiency is the driving factor for a team of dedicated staff members at Texas A&M University Colonias Program located in Laredo, Texas.  Together with partnering agencies, this team provides literacy and job training, health education, economic and community development support for these communities all year round.  Thanks to their efforts and advocacy, numerous families are able to obtain information, training and opportunities to help improve their quality of life.  This year it is no different for serving families and the families’ needs are only greater.  The motivation to serve others and following their desire to impact the community in a positive manner coupled with bringing a smile to children in the communities, students of the Area Health Education Center Student Leadership Program recently identified and worked on two community learn-and-serve projects.  A toy drive which garnered hundreds of toys for children and a smile drive which also gathered hundreds of oral care products for families.  These projects were carefully organized and undertaken with all the public health recommendations in place to keep everyone safe and healthy.  “Nothing compares to the feeling you get when you give of your time to help others” remarked Joseph Solis AHEC Student.  Students arranged the delivery of toys and supplies to the staff at Texas A&M University Colonias Program.

MRGB AHEC Welcomes Bella Rosales as Intern: The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Board of Directors welcomes Miss Isabella (Bella) Rosales as the AHEC intern.  Bella is a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in Neuroscience and obtained a certificate in Forensic Science. She is currently enrolled in a UX/UI (User Research/User Interaction) Bootcamp program where she will be obtaining a UX/UI certificate. This career path entails designing products such as websites and applications but can be applied to a myriad of other product types. She joined the AHEC team in January 2021 and she has already made significant contributions in support of the AHEC mission.  In her role as intern, she will be shadowing Ms. Julie Bazan, AHEC Executive Director, to learn about leadership, the non-profit industry and way to leverage resources to help impact a community through education serving students, professionals and community members.  In addition, she will be working on redesigning the social media platforms and the website to further increase the value of these resources for the use of the community.  Bella will accomplish this by conducting a user research study detailing the user experience with the current state of the website. This research includes identifying changes needed to better serve the public and identifying ways to make the website user friendly.  If you would like to participate in this study, please contact Isabella Rosales at isabella.ahec@gmail.com or call 956-712-0037.

Welcome Madeleine!: We would like to welcome our newest member Madeleine Tran to the South Central AHEC team! Madeleine is a former intern and now South Central AHEC’s graduate student associate who will be managing the AHEC Scholars Program. Madeleine recently graduated from UTSA with her bachelor’s in public health, and she currently attending Texas Woman’s University for her master’s in health administration.

Congratulations to Dr. Eduardo Gandara on completing his DrPH degree!: Dr. Gandara’s project focused on understanding facilitators and barriers of conducting adult health programs within the African-American church. In addition, his research focused on re-examining religious based constructs to see if their factor structure matched what was in the literature. Lastly, Dr. Gandara’s work sought to understand facilitators and barriers of conducting adult health programs within the African-American church from the perspective of African-American women pastors as their unique perspective had not been studied. Dr. Gandara will continue to work within the AHEC to expand evidence-based programming as well as community-based projects in the surrounding community.

Welcome AHEC Scholars: South Central AHEC Scholars Program would like to welcome our two new scholars, Aijaz Mughal and Zainab Naeem. Both Aijaz and Zainab are graduate students at UTHealth School of Public Health San Antonio. We look forward to having them as a part of our program!

Welcome Anatasia and Destiny!: We would like to welcome our newest spring interns, Anastasia Jones, and Destiny Oluoha from UTSA. Destiny Oluoha is a Senior at UTSA majoring in Public Health with a concentration in Health Promotion and a minor in African American Studies. She is currently interning at South Central AHEC while in undergrad and is set to graduate in May. She plans on attending graduate school afterwards and attain a Master’s in Public Health to start a career in patient advocacy.

San Antonio Community Health Workers: We would like to highlight our very own Ludy Hernandez, CHW and the Community Health Workers (CHWs) across San Antonio who came together to provide relief for families impacted by the winter storm. February’s winter storm caused devastating circumstances for many Texans across and San Antonio was no exception. With hundreds seeking assistance, CHWS from Northwest Vista College and the San Antonio CHW Association sprung into action to help the direst cases. Together they raised a total of $1,075 to help 10 families with a unique dynamics of grandparents raising grandchildren, who were identified through community leaders. The funds have helped families pay rent, food, and other bills they missed out on because the weather kept them from working. We are incredibly proud to work with Ludy Hernandez and all of her efforts for the community.

1.    Motivational Interviewing led by Dr. Stacy Ogbeide
2.    COVID 19 Messaging and the Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Project led by Dr. Robert Ferrer
3.    COVID Vaccines led by J. Niles Barnes, PharmD.
4.    Social Determinants of Health led by Dr. Lorena Paul, Mindfulness led by Cynthia Richardson, RN, MSN, CNE and Relaxation led by Dr. Kathryn Kanzler
In addition to these topics, participants were also tasked with developing an “asset map” of the communities they serve and locate those agencies that could help and assist to increase evidence-based messaging to the public. The sessions were held every Friday beginning late January and ending on February 26th. Reviews from the program reported that the program was very successful, so our next step is to offer it through ECHO technology.

Fighting on Multiple Fronts: Practical Perspectives on the COVID-19 Impact in Latinx Communities

The media has continued to draw attention to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities of color, but far more work is still needed to understand the scale of impact and address the many possible drivers.

To examine the issue from multiple vantage points, we’ve convened multidisciplinary researchers from the Latino Research Institute's COVID Research Consortium, along with experts from Dell Medical School and the Migrant Clinicians Network, to help move this issue beyond general discourse and bring it to our community health professionals who are on the ground.

Together, we’ll confront the following questions head-on: what exactly are the factors influencing the prevention and effective treatment of Latino COVID patients? Are there major concerns when it comes to tending to the physical and mental needs of Latinos during this time? And how does responding to these particular needs ultimately weigh on our community's healthcare providers and impact their mental health?
