TAPCHW recognizes Martha Castilla as CHW of the Year!
 The Texas Association of Promotoras and Community Health Workers recognized Martha Castilla for the CHW of the Year - Lifetime Contribution Award. This award is presented to an individual CHW with long-standing service who has demonstrated sustained commitment, leadership and community trust. Congratulations Martha!
CHW Capacity Building at the Healthcare Initiative Conference On April 22, 2026 Martha Castilla presented her poster at the Healthcare Initiative Conference in San Antonio. The project focused on building CHW capacity for stronger communities.

  On March 5, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC participated in a Career Readiness Fair at Eagle Pass High School, where students were encouraged to begin exploring future career opportunities and the educational pathways needed to achieve them. During the event, Southwest Border AHEC highlighted careers in healthcare, with a particular focus on the Community Health Worker (CHW) profession. Students learned about the important role CHWs play in improving community health and connecting individuals to healthcare and social services. Information was also shared about the CHW training opportunities available through Southwest Border AHEC for students enrolled in the school's health careers track. The fair provided an opportunity for students to learn about healthcare careers, explore workforce opportunities, and begin planning for their future educational and professional goals. Ventanilla de Salud - Health Screenings
  On March 10, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC partnered with the Consulado de México en Eagle Pass through the Ventanilla de Salud program to provide free health screenings for community members. More than 40 individuals received health screenings during the event, helping increase access to preventive health services and health information. The initiative supported ongoing efforts to connect community members with resources that promote early detection, disease prevention, and overall well-being. Southwest Border AHEC's Spring Break First Aid Camp
  On March 10–13, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC hosted its Spring Break Camp at Southwest Texas College in Eagle Pass. Led by Ms. Diamantina Galindo, a head instructor of health professions at Southwest Texas College, the four-day camp provided students with hands-on exposure to healthcare skills and career pathways. 16 students participated in the camp, where they learned how to measure and interpret vital signs, administer basic first aid, and respond to common emergencies. Students also completed CPR training and earned their CPR certification. The camp helped introduce students to foundational healthcare skills while encouraging interest in health professions and future educational opportunities. World Autism Day Community Fair - Del Rio, Texas
  On March 14, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC participated in the World Autism Day Community Fair hosted by the Consulate of Mexico in Del Rio. Held at the Del Rio Civic Center, the event brought together families, service organizations, and community members to raise awareness and support for individuals and families affected by autism. Southwest Border AHEC provided health education resources and information while engaging with attendees and sharing available community services. Ventanilla de Salud - Health Screenings - Del Rio, Texas    On March 17, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC partnered with the Consulado de México en Del Rio through the Ventanilla de Salud program to provide free health screenings for community members. Caminata del Autismo (Autism Awareness Walk)
   On April 1, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC collaborated with the Consulate of Mexico in Eagle Pass and numerous community partners in hosting the Caminata del Autismo (Autism Awareness Walk). The walk began at the Historic Maverick County Courthouse and concluded at Plaza San Juan, bringing together more than 300 community members in support of autism awareness and inclusion. The event brought attention to the importance of understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals and families affected by autism. P.E.A.A.K.S. Students Visit TAMUCC
  On April 6, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC's PEAAKS program organized a campus visit to Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi for 25 students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare and the health sciences. Students had the opportunity to tour the campus, learn about academic programs offered through the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and gain a firsthand look at the university environment. The visit provided valuable exposure to higher education pathways and healthcare careers while allowing students to engage with faculty, staff, and current students. Through experiences such as this, PEAAKS continues to support local students in exploring health professions and preparing for future educational and career opportunities. Jornada de Salud - Consulado de Mexico & UT Health San Antonio
  On April 11, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC partnered with the Consulate of Mexico in Eagle Pass and UT Health San Antonio to host a Jornada de Salud (Community Health Fair) focused on diabetes education and preventive health services. The event drew more than 70 community members seeking health information and screenings. Medical students from UT Health San Antonio provided free health services, including blood pressure screenings, glucose testing, A1C testing, cholesterol and triglyceride screenings, body measurements, and circulation assessments. The event helped connect community members with preventive health resources while increasing awareness of diabetes and cardiovascular health. SCAN - Children's Play Day
  On April 21, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC joined SCAN (Serving Children and Adults in Need) and other community partners at SCAN Children's Play Day at the Multi-Purpose Center in Eagle Pass. The free family event included activities, arts and crafts, music, and other opportunities for children and families to connect. Promotoras En Accion - P.E.A.C.H.E.S. - Como Manejar tu Dinero y Credito
 On April 22, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC hosted Cómo Manejar Tu Dinero y Crédito, a financial education session presented by Joe Cruz of Border Federal Credit Union at Southwest Texas College in Eagle Pass. During the session, participants learned practical strategies for managing personal finances, understanding credit, and making informed financial decisions. The discussion focused on building financial knowledge and strengthening skills that can support long-term financial well-being for individuals and families. Community Health Workers who attended also received 2 hours of Non-DSHS continuing education credit. The event provided an opportunity for community members to gain valuable financial education while connecting with local resources and community partners. Dia del Nino Festival
  On April 30, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC participated in a Día del Niño event hosted by the Consulado de México in Eagle Pass. The event brought together more than 200 children for a community celebration focused on families and children. Southwest Border AHEC provided information and items to help promote good oral hygiene habits among children and support child health education in the community. Congratulations to the Newest EPISD Community Health Workers  After a year of dedication, learning, and hard work, nine Eagle Pass Independent School District students have successfully completed the Community Health Worker (CHW) training program. Throughout the year, these students developed knowledge and skills in health education, communication, advocacy, community resources, and public health. Their accomplishment reflects a strong commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in their communities. Southwest Border AHEC congratulates this outstanding cohort on reaching this important milestone. P.E.A.A.K.S. Dating Violence Awareness - UT Teen Health   On May 6, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC, in collaboration with UT Teen Health, provided a dating violence awareness presentation for 19 high school students in Eagle Pass. During the session, students learned about healthy relationships, warning signs of dating violence, effective communication, and available resources for seeking help and support. The program encouraged students to recognize unhealthy behaviors, build positive relationship skills, and make informed decisions that support their safety and well-being. Health Screenings - Semana Binacional del Deporte  On May 6, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC participated in Semana Binacional del Deporte, an event hosted by the Consulate of Mexico in Eagle Pass to promote physical activity, health, and wellness within the community. As part of the event, Southwest Border AHEC provided free health screenings and health education resources to over 35 attendees. The screenings offered community members an opportunity to learn more about their health while reinforcing the importance of preventive care and healthy lifestyles. Mother's Day Loteria - Consulado de Mexico
  On May 12, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC participated in a community Lotería event hosted by the Consulate of Mexico in Eagle Pass. The event brought together community members for an engaging and culturally familiar approach to health education and outreach. Over 90 community members attended and received health information, learned about available community resources, and connected with local organizations while enjoying the interactive Lotería activity. Southwest Border AHEC joined community partners in sharing health education materials and promoting access to health-related services and programs available in the community. Viviendo Valiente CHW Training
 -  On May 13–14, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC hosted the Viviendo Valiente: HIV Education training at Southwest Texas College in Eagle Pass. The two-day training was provided by individuals representing both Valley AIDS Council and AETC South Central and offered 14 DSHS continuing education hours for Community Health Workers (CHWs) and CHW Instructors. A total of 17 Community Health Workers completed the training, strengthening their knowledge of HIV education, prevention, and community outreach. The training helped support the local CHW workforce in sharing accurate health information and connecting community members with available resources. Promotoras En Accion - P.E.A.C.H.E.S. - Cuidar a Quien Cuida
   On May 20, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC hosted Cuidar a Quien Cuida, a continuing education session for CHWs presented by Cynthia Castillo, CHWI, at Southwest Texas College in Eagle Pass. A total of 18 Community Health Workers attended the training, which focused on the importance of self-care for mothers and caregivers, available support resources, and strategies for maintaining emotional and physical well-being. Participants also took part in a painting activity designed to encourage relaxation and personal expression. Love Notes Training - UT Teen Health    On May 26–29, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC hosted the Love Notes Teen Empowerment Camp in Eagle Pass using the UT Teen Health Love Notes curriculum. The four-day camp helped students build knowledge and skills for making informed decisions about relationships, personal goals, education, work, and family life. A total of 32 students completed the training. Seco Mines Community Health Fair/Loteria
  On May 27, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC joined the South Texas Aging and Disability Resource Center and community partners in celebrating Older Americans Month at the Seco Mines Community Center in Eagle Pass. More than 50 community members attended the event, which featured health information, community resources, and a Lotería activity designed to encourage engagement and social connection among older adults. The event provided an opportunity for participants to learn about available services while celebrating healthy aging and community involvement. Southwest Border AHEC participated alongside local partners to share health education resources and connect community members with programs and services available throughout the region. South Texas Family Planning Mobile Unit Comes to Eagle Pass   On May 27, Southwest Border AHEC helped coordinate a mobile health clinic with South Texas Family Planning & Health Corporation at Southwest Texas College in Eagle Pass. Through this partnership, more than 60 patients received important preventive and primary healthcare services close to home. Services included health screenings, immunizations, well-health exams, reproductive health services, pregnancy testing, breast and cervical cancer screenings, laboratory services, and other preventive care resources. Southwest Border AHEC was proud to serve as a key community partner and collaborator in helping bring this opportunity to Eagle Pass. This event reflects the importance of local partnerships in improving access to care and connecting residents with services that support long-term health and wellness. Opioid Awareness Training - Student Edition
 On May 29, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC partnered with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Eagle Pass SAFE to provide an opioid awareness presentation for high school students in Eagle Pass. More than 30 students attended the training, where they learned about the risks associated with opioid misuse, substance use prevention, and the importance of making informed health decisions. The session provided students with practical information and resources aimed at increasing awareness and promoting healthy choices among youth. South Texas Family Planning Mobile Unit - Crystal City
  Southwest Border AHEC is partnering with South Texas Family Planning and The Crystal City Coalition (CCC) to bring free mobile healthcare services to residents of Crystal City and the surrounding Zavala County area. As a key community partner and collaborator, Southwest Border AHEC is helping connect local residents with important preventive and primary healthcare services, including health screenings, laboratory services, health education, and other medical resources. The mobile clinic will provide an opportunity for community members to access care close to home and reflects a shared commitment to improving health outcomes, reducing barriers to care, and expanding access to healthcare resources in rural and underserved communities. Connecting Families to Care: 2026 Genetics Conference
 During April, the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, and UT Austin’s Texas Center for Disability Studies hosted the 2026 Genetics Conference & Resource Fair. Thank you to our parter in health, Laredo Public Health for hosting the event, over 100 families were welcomed and empowered with knowledge and resources. Founded in 2012, the conference connects families to the latest genetics research, screening, diagnosis, and care coordination. This year’s event highlighted the growing need for early identification and support. The CDC reports that 1 in 31 U.S. children has autism, with boys affected over three times more often than girls. Nearly 20% of children with autism have an identifiable genetic condition, and 1 in 10 Americans lives with a rare genetic disease—factors that significantly increase emotional and financial strain on families. Presentations covered Navigating the Intervention Gap, ABA Beyond Therapy, Health Care Transition Planning, and When to Seek Genetic Testing, offering families practical guidance during a time when only half of children with autism receive a developmental evaluation by age 3. Families also explored local and regional resources, enjoyed refreshments and door prizes, and engaged directly with specialists, who remained available for questions after each session. Spanish interpretation ensured full accessibility for all attendees. The 2026 conference continued its mission of empowering families with knowledge, connection, and hope as they navigate autism and genetic conditions. Numerous agencies and advocates continue to unite to ensure that education, information and access to services is a priority for families of children with special needs. AHEC Celebrates Hazel Medellín’s 15 Years of Service
 The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is pleased to recognize Ms. Hazel Medellín, Academic & Continuing Education Programs Coordinator, for 15 years of service to the Mid Rio Grande Border Area. For 15 years, Hazel Medellín has been a steady source of compassion, guidance, and inspiration within the AHEC. Recently, the AHEC Board and staff celebrated not just her years of service, but the countless lives she has touched along the way. Hazel’s work has always been rooted in the heart. Whether she is speaking to a classroom of students, supporting a community partner, or preparing a new educational program, she brings warmth, patience, and a genuine desire to help others grow. Her ability to connect with young people, especially those who need encouragement the most, has made her a trusted mentor and a powerful advocate for education and wellbeing. Over the years, Hazel has reached thousands of students with messages that matter: confidence, boundaries, mental health, career exploration, and the belief that their future is worth investing in. Her recent session at Cigarroa High School, where she guided more than 500 students through a conversation on healthy boundaries, is just one example of the impact she makes every day. Her dedication has strengthened AHEC’s academic and continuing education efforts and has helped build a healthier, more informed community. “Hazel, thank you for 15 years of service, leadership, and heart. \Mental Health Awareness Month kicks off with a symposium
 On Friday, May 1, 2026, the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), in partnership with IBC Bank and the Texas Department of State Health Services Office of Border Public Health, hosted the 19th Annual Mental Health and Substance Abuse Awareness Symposium at the IBC Annex. The event served as the official kickoff to Mental Health Awareness Month, reinforcing the community’s commitment to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and improving access to behavioral health care. Mental health challenges continue to affect millions of individuals and families nationwide. Mental illnesses impact tens of millions of people in the United States each year, yet only about half of those affected receive treatment, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). NIMH The need for early intervention is especially urgent among youth: suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals ages 10–34, with more than 49,300 lives lost to suicide in 2023. NIMH These realities underscore the importance of accessible, culturally responsive education, particularly in underserved communities facing rising rates of depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. This year’s symposium addressed these challenges through timely and engaging presentations, including “Fentanyl 101,” “Mindful Movement for Mental Wellness,” and “Artificial Intelligence and Mental Health.” Presenters highlighted the growing impact of fentanyl and tobacco products, aligning with national data showing increasing substance use concerns documented in the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). SAMHSA The program included a special proclamation video from Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño, emphasizing the City of Laredo’s dedication to mental health awareness and community wellbeing. Participants attended the symposium to gain valuable tools, resources, and knowledge that support prevention, early intervention, and recovery efforts across the region. Genesis Garza Advances to HOSA International Leadership Conference
 The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) proudly announces that Genesis Garza, an active AHEC Student Leadership Program participant and a 988 You Are Not Alone Student Ambassador, has advanced to the HOSA–Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference, marking a significant achievement in her academic and leadership journey. Genesis is a student at Harmony School of Excellence High School. Genesis competed in the Speaking Skills event, where she delivered a compelling 3–4minute speech inspired by the 2024–2025 HOSA theme, “Champions of Change.” Her performance demonstrated exceptional confidence, communication skills, and a deep commitment to the future of healthcare. Her outstanding presentation earned her 3rd place at the State HOSA Competition, held February 27 and March 26, securing her advancement to the international stage. In addition to her competitive success, Genesis was honored with the Extraordinary HOSA Member Award, a prestigious recognition presented to one exemplary student leader from each chartered association. This award highlights her dedication, service, and leadership within the HOSA community. HOSA is an international, studentled organization dedicated to empowering future health professionals through leadership development, competitive events, and educational opportunities. AHEC Aims to Strengthen Healthcare Workforce
 \The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) successfully delivered its Healthcare Careers and College Pathways Student Panel, engaging over 50 high school students as they explore future opportunities in healthcare. The event, hosted by Laredo Medical Center, was in response to the students’ feedback received at the March Spring Break forum, supports AHEC’s mission to strengthen the regional workforce pipeline, especially as Webb County continues to face critical shortages in primary care, mental health, and dental providers. Students participated in an interactive welcome led by AHEC Interns Mireya Molina and Alexiz Moncada – both student leaders in university health care programs. The program continued with a dynamic studentled healthcare career panel representing medicine, nursing, psychology, public health, physical therapy, and dualdegree pathways. Panelists shared their educational journeys, challenges, and lessons learned—offering relatable insight that resonated with attendees. Career station rotations allowed students to explore specific fields in depth, while a closing presentation on college majors, applications, scholarships, and financial aid equipped them with practical guidance for next steps. The strong turnout, active participation, and continued student engagement demonstrate the event’s impact and the ongoing need to invest in local youth as future healthcare professionals. This event matters because it directly addresses the significant shortages across the healthcare workforce by inspiring local students to pursue healthcare careers, strengthening the long-term workforce pipeline. Overall, the event met its objectives of increasing awareness of healthcare careers and guiding college pathways.    Kate Marmion School of Public Health and Bexar County Public Health for a dynamic, one-day Public Health Summit, "Health Begins Here: Community Wisdom, Collective Action" held in observance of National Public Health Week 2026. This essential event is designed to foster connection, dialogue, and action among public health practitioners, students, leaders, and community members dedicated to improving well-being across South Texas. University of Michigan and South Central AHEC, Another Successful Year of Partnership
  We had the pleasure of hosting students from the University of Michigan for another successful year of partnership and community engagement with South Central Texas AHEC. 🌟 Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to connect with and learn from communities on both the West Side and East Side of San Antonio in Bexar County, gaining valuable insight into the strengths, needs, and experiences of the communities we serve. This experience would not have been possible without the support and involvement of our community partners and leaders. Health Confianza: Building Confianza, Voices, Lessons and Actions Summit
 What an incredible day to celebrate! On May 15, South Central AHEC had the honor of attending the Health Confianza: Building Confianza, Voices, Lessons and Actions Summit, and were left with full hearts and two well-earned awards! We were recognized for completing the Organizational Health Literacy Pledge Program. A true testament to the team's unwavering dedication to advancing healthcare in our community. Seeing that commitment acknowledged alongside our amazing community partners, Southside Collaborative, WestCare Texas, and YWCA San Antonio, made it all the more meaningful. But the celebration didn't stop there! During the summit, Health Confianza and our partners officially launched the Health Begins with Confianza campaign a free, preventive health initiative designed to meet people right where they are. The campaign includes easy-to-use health roadmaps tailored for men, women, babies, children and teens, and older adults, along with a wealth of other educational tools. Chat at the Quiosco! presents Arthritic Pain: Know the Difference Between Common Diagnoses
 What a great opportunity to discuss how to recognize and differentiate common causes of joint pain, including gout, pseudogout, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis, and cellulitis. Conversations like these help strengthen community awareness and encourage early recognition of important warning signs. Bishop Ribbon Cutting
  Nueces County Precinct 2 Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez was instrumental in organizing the construction of a new park in the small town of Bishop. The local little league was grateful for his dedication to the community and held a ribbon-cutting. South Coastal AHEC stopped by to show its support for Bishop and provided a few snacks for the kids. This new park features a walking path, splash pad, playground, basketball court, and baseball field. It promotes health and staying active in all stages of life. The Pink Event
 The pink event is held annually in April to serve as a reminder that breast cancer awareness is year-round and not just in October. This event invites members of the community to attend for free. They hear testimonials, participate in education sessions, and ask questions. Throughout the event, they are encouraged to get up and speak with the vendors. Nueces County Health Fairs
   April 30th kicked off end-of-the-year physicals for South Coastal AHEC. Since UIL physicals are good for one year, the team does them at the end of the school year for students who will be participating in summer sports. These physicals are all offered at no cost. Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Course 
  Each year in May, South Coastal AHEC hosts an Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course. This course prepares medical professionals with skills to safely deliver a baby in the event of an emergency. For more information, contact Belinda Flores at 361-881-8133
Medical Student Mask Fitting
  One aspect of training to become a medical professional is doing a mask fitting. Medical students must demonstrate how to accurately wear PPE. Nurse Image Maker Award
  Director of South Coastal AHEC, Bel Flores, was recognized at the annual Nurse Image Maker award ceremony. This event highlights exceptional nurses in South Texas. Belinda Flores has dedicated her life's work to serving the underserved communities of South Texas. She has served as board chair for the Nueces County Hospital District, and currently, is the Director of the South Coastal Area Health Education Center. In this position, she strives to improve access to quality health care in South Texas through the facilitation of health professions training and education. Her kindness, compassion, and leadership shine through in all that she does. International Women's Day 2026
  On March 31, 2026, the Lower Rio Grande Valley AHEC and the Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice hosted an event to honor the struggle of women for their participation in society and their full development as individuals. High Risk Maternal Care Coordination Services Project – UT Health Houston
 Southwest Border AHEC is working in partnership with UTHealth Houston on a maternal health project focused on supporting pregnant and postpartum women in Maverick County. Through this effort, Community Health Workers will help identify maternal health needs, connect families with care and resources, and support follow-up with local services. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to improving maternal health, strengthening community-based support, and helping families access the care they need close to home. Promotoras En Accion - P.E.A.C.H.E.S. - Families Talking Together
 On June 24, 2026, Southwest Border AHEC will partner with UT Teen Health in hosting Families Talking Together, a community education program designed to help parents and caregivers strengthen communication with adolescents, build positive family relationships, and support healthy decision-making. Participants will learn practical strategies for improving parent-teen communication, fostering positive family dynamics, and preventing risk behaviors among youth. The program is open to the community and will also provide 2 hours of Non-DSHS continuing education credit for Community Health Workers (CHWs). July 15 - 23, 2026 at 3 locations in Nueces County July 15th will kick off the annual Nueces County Health & Wellness initiative. This year, the United States Navy will be assisting to provide gaps in care. This 10-day event will be completely free. Services will include Vision, General wellness exams, Health Screenings, Dental exams, Behavioral Health screenings, and Veterinary services. Orange Grove Food Distribution

El Buen Pastor Church 308 Voelkel Ave, Orange Grove, TX 78373 South Coastal AHEC will be heading to Orange Grove to organize the monthly food distribution. Through collaboration with all four Nueces County Commissioners, CHRISTUS Spohn Residency Programs, and the local ISDs, South Coastal AHEC provides a no-cost, UIL-approved sports physical to any child who attends. This program is an opportunity for health profession students, of all disciplines, to participate in interprofessional education (IPE) healthcare activities. The duration of the program is 1-2 years (depending on discipline), runs concurrently with a student’s academic curriculum, and concludes when the student graduates from their respective health profession program. In addition to educational and professional enrichment, the AHEC Scholars Program offers a $500 stipend, per year in the program, to help offset student costs.  Be Well Texas is a flagship initiative of the Be Well Institute on Substance Use and Related Disorders at UT Health San Antonio, advancing research, clinical care, and education to address substance use across the state. Through partnerships with community organizations, healthcare providers, and a HRSA-funded Rural Consortium, Be Well Texas breaks down longstanding barriers to quality care for individuals, families, and communities throughout Texas. At the heart of the initiative is a statewide provider network and a virtual and in-person outpatient clinic delivering low-barrier, evidence-based care — including medications for opioid and alcohol use disorder, counseling, peer support, and care navigation — where it's needed most. Be Well Texas also strengthens the broader healthcare system through free training, outreach, and naloxone distribution, empowering local providers to better serve their communities.
