Celebrating Aging in Bexar County

 .      

Our event "Celebrating Aging in Bexar County" was a fun event with many local resources. The event was held in the west side of San Antonio at The Neighborhood Place family service center. The event had a special guest speaker, Dr. Elliot Lopez, who spoke about ACTing your age - Acceptance and Commitment Principles While Aging in Place. Michigan Students Visit

       

We hosted a group of 13 Michigan graduate students who are a part of the Public Health Action Support Team (PHAST). They stayed a whole week with us and were here to do asset mapping, conducted long COVID focus group, and conducted key informant interviews to understand long COVID and the Edgewood / West side COVID resources. They also presented everything they learned from conducting all the research they did to community members and everyone who participated.

Salud En Mis Manos in the Community

       

South Coastal AHEC continues to promote the Salud En Mis Manos/Health in My Hands program to our community. The goal of the program is to educate Hispanic/Latina women on the importance of prevention and early detection of breast and cervical cancer as well as to offer women free or low-cost mammograms, pap smears and HPV vaccines. Our community health workers are ready and eager to provide education to all women of South Texas.    Our CHWs provided education and health coach navigation at 15 events in the coastal bend area in the months of March, April, and May at local health fairs, kid fests, the Mexican Consulate, and many more locations. South Texas Listening Sessions   

 

    

Mays Cancer Center, in partnership with South Coastal AHEC, held a South Texas Listening Session at El Buen Pastor in Orange Grove. These sessions are held to gain input from the rural communities about the issues they face with cancer screenings and treatment. For more information, contact: Belinda Flores, 361.881.8133

 

Corpus Christi Vestido Rojo: el Ritmo que da Vida


                

South Coastal AHEcCs Director, Belinda Flores provided crucial education about CPR and saving lives. Everyone was provided an opportunity to practice chest compressions during this fun, interactive, and informative presentation. For more information, contact: Belinda Flores, 361.881.8133

 

TAMU-CC Community Health Nursing Panel

The  first Community Health Nursing Panel was held on Monday, April 17, South Coastal AHEC Director Belinda Flores was one of several  panelists sharing information on the many roles for nurses outside of acute care, how she came to be in the role, and the pros and cons of working as a Community Health Nurse.

Hearing Checks at the Library

 

South Coastal AHEC provided hearing checks for toddlers at the Ben F. McDonald Public Library as part of their 1-2-3 Grow with Me! program. For more information contact South Coastal AHEC at 361.881.8133

 

Physical Clinics for the Community

  

   

South Coastal AHEC, partnering with the local residency programs and school districts, held numerous physical clinics throughout the area to get kids ready for sports, band, dance and other UIL extracurricular activities. For more information, contact Melissa Flores, 361.881.8133

 

Calderon Health Fair

   

In celebration and promotion of the opening of a new rural health clinic in Robstown, the Calderon Clinic. South Coastal AHEC coordinated a health fair. Orange Grove Food Distribution

 .     

South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with the Food Bank of Corpus Christi, provides over 200 families and individuals with healthy food and various educational resources to the residents of Orange Grove and surrounding rural areas. Cardiovascular Journal Club

South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital, continues with its monthly Cardiovascular Journal Club Meetings. This interprofessional educational activity provides an opportunity for cardiologists and other interested healthcare providers to discuss current cases as well as learn about emerging research and innovations in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

 

CEAL (Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities) Project

.     

South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with The UT Rio Grande Valley, is conducting focus groups within our community that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 to learn how people are feeling physically and mentally after being positive for COVID-19.  

 

Caring for the Caregiver Community Platica

  

South Texas AHEC partnered with the "Caring for the Caregiver Group," part of UT-Health San Antonio. It is a group having "Platicas" with caregivers that care for their loved ones with Alzheimer's and dementia. The "Platicas" allow for caregivers to share what they go through and what would help them to better care for their loved ones.  Several "Platicas" have taken place throughout South Texas. Laredo hosted the most recent Platica and it was truly a wonderful experience for the families. For more information, contact South Coastal AHEC 361.881.8133

 

ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics)

  

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an evidence based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. For more information contact South Coastal AHEC 361.881.8133

 

CHW Self Care Workshop

  

South Coastal AHEC and South Central AHEC collaborated to provide a CHW Self Care conference at the Neighborhood Place in San Antonio. Continuing Education credits were provided for this day of learning, fun, and most importantly Self Care.

 

TAR WARS

The South Coastal AHEC team provided this tobacco prevention program to the students at Ella Barnes Elementary. This program from the American Academy of Family Physicians is aimed at preventing kids from trying tobacco and vaping.  It encourages children to speak out and work for a tobacco free campus, reach out to elected officials, and take action in their community.

 

Science Spectacular

South Coastal AHEC Community Health Workers attended the Mireles Elementary Science Spectacular. Our CHWs engaged the elementary students in learning about health careers and the many different opportunities available in the field.

How Common Conditions Affect the Eyes and Ways to Protect your Vision  

We have two family residents who will be talking to community members about how common conditions affect the eyes and ways to protect your vision. They will be talking about identifying eye anatomy, defining medical terms, discussing the most common ocular conditions, exploring preventative measures & the importance of preventative medicine, and providing active resources available for eye health. SEMM (Salud en Mis Manos/Health in My Hands)

South Coastal AHEC will be attending several events to enroll women into our SEMM program. Salud En Mis Manos (Health in My Hands) is a project from UT Houston that is aimed to help Hispanic and Latina women learn more about breast and cervical cancer prevention. We have the ability to give free or low-cost pap smears, mammograms, and HPV vaccinations. As women we tend to put ourselves last when it comes to our health. Our goal is to help empower women to take their health into their hands to prevent and detect cancer early. We are here to serve you.

 

Rural Food Distribution

June 17, 2023, El Buen Pastor, Orange Grove, TX

South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with the Food Bank of Corpus Christi, holds its monthly food distribution for the residents of Orange Grove and surrounding rural areas every 3rd Saturday of the month. 

 

6th Annual Hospice Symposium

June 21, 2023

South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with Del Mar College, will hold the 6th Annual Hospice Symposium on June 21, 2023, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The goal of this activity is to provide both medical professionals and community members with the opportunity to learn about hospice care and the important role it plays in our health care system. The conference will feature presentations on a variety of topics related to hospice and end-of-life care. To register, email vegab@uthscsa.edu

South Coastal AHEC, in collaboration with Nueces County Commissioner Robert Hernandez and Tuloso-Midway ISD will be holding a Back to School Health Fair. In addition to athletic physicals, diabetes screenings, and blood  pressure checks. There will also be a backpack giveaway. music, and health resources.   

 

2023 Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) Medical Mission


July 18 - July 27, 2023

South Coastal AHEC, in partnership with the Department of Defense (DoD), Nueces County Commissioner (JAG) and other community organizations, is gearing up for the 2023 IRT Medical Mission. This event will take place July 18-27, 2023 at various sites throughout Nueces County. Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) is a collaborative program that leverages military contributions and community resources to multiply value and cost savings for participants. IRT Medical missions provide communities with various no-cost healthcare services including, medical, behavioral health, dental, optical, and veterinarian services. Care will be delivered by credentialed healthcare providers, and no one will be turned away.

Attention Health Profession Students! The AHEC Scholars Program is Recruiting!

This program is an opportunity for health profession students, of all disciplines, to participate in interprofessional education (IPE) healthcare activities. The duration of the program is 1-2 years (depending on discipline), runs concurrently with a student’s academic curriculum, and concludes when the student graduates from their respective health profession program. In addition to educational and professional enrichment, the AHEC Scholars Program offers a $500 stipend, per year in the program, to help offset student costs. Aprendiendo Juntos / Learning Together to Give Care

"Aprendiendo Juntos / Learning together to give care" is a 6-week online program. This program provides caregivers the tools to build their confidence in providing care for a person living with dementia. Caregivers who participate can receive up to $120 in gift cards.  We have sessions in both Spanish and English starting in June and July 2023.
